AU/PG/Canon Point After the Spill started eating everything, before the current group of shades arrived Game(s) [community profile] sidereal_rp
Canon Details "The country for the unjustly dead" was an afterlife specifically for those souls who died with some destiny-ordained task left undone, thereby damaging the fabric of fate. There, they would be put through trials designed to both refine and judge their worthiness to go back and fix the mistake that killed them. This task was carried out by "Arbiters," parasitic organisms of all shapes and sizes that took the bodies of any unworthy dead who volunteered to act as their hosts.

...That was how it was meant to go, anyway. However, a dark stain called "the Spill" has been slowly moving over the land, devouring any Arbiters it comes across and changing the shades it touches into horrible, hungry caricatures of their former selves— and nobody seems to know where it's come from or how to stop it...
Character Details
Age Appears to be in their late teens Hair/Eyes Shaggy black hair and black eyes.
Height/Weight 5'6", 115 lbs wtf anime weights Notable Traits Wears a giant emerald tree boa skull over their face like a mix between a mask and a visor.
Clothing Loose, layered t-shirts and jeans, all in grays, blacks, and the occasional navy. The materials and tailoring are all high-quality. Occasionally wears flowers (or flower crowns) in their hair.
15 Second Summary A judge of the dead shaped like a giant emerald boa skull, possessing a degraded soul.

As an Arbiter, she's a reverse psychopomp tasked with testing and judging the dead to determine which ones are "worthy" of returning to the land of the living to try again. She doesn't quite have free will or personhood, since she was literally made and programmed for that task, and it doesn't help that her clan's philosophy was to put duty above individuality to the point that they didn't even take names.

Despite that, experience and the influence of the people around her have lead her to develop a quiet, patient, and selfless personality, with a strong interest in other people's lives and stories. She enjoys seeing the happiness of the people around her, and strongly dislikes seeing anyone suffering unnecessarily— though her definition of "unnecessary" is perhaps a little non-standard...
Abilities & Permissions
Abilities Capable of healing or altering bodies, as well as manipulating plant growth to some extent. Very strong and durable with a high pain tolerance; very little other than total destruction will slow her down. She also has "authority" over the dead— particularly the "unjustly dead," IE characters from AUs where they died when in canon they lived. If you have a character who falls into that category and do/do not want her to take an interest in them, please let me know!

Also, her host body is Sasuke Uchiha's (yes, from Naruto...) so she has access to a stupid amount of ninjutsu, is incredible with martial arts, and also has the Sharingan. I swear I did this as a joke and not to make her OP THIS DECISION HAS COME BACK TO HAUNT ME SO MANY TIMES
Permissions I am okay with many things! My only real limits are that I can't play out outright noncon or dubcon that would lead to real upset later, and I'd prefer to avoid loving descriptions of certain kinds of torture (eye, mouth, or finger trauma). If things are getting intense one way or another I would also like to be in contact!
Sensing Pings of death and has no soul of her own! It also is not difficult to tell that she's the skull, not the body, and that the body is in fact braindead due to its soul being almost completely rotted away.
A NOTE While the snake skull herself identifies as feminine, her host body is a cis man's. I'll be using they/their and she/her pronouns as well as using masculine descriptors depending on context and what "viewpoint" I'm writing action tags from, but feel free to have characters make assumptions ICly; she doesn't care too much. (Also— if I do anything potentially insensitive with her, please let me know. I have an opt-out/crit post here if you'd prefer to do so anonymously.)

I wanted to put a witty summary of this AU here but once again I'm too hype to just get to starting the thing \:D/

This is mostly a placeholder that I will be tidying up later, but! The snake skull carries out her duties in a slightly different manner than the other Arbiters encountered so far. Rather than running games (or only running games), they both support and judge shades through assigning tasks or trades for things like healing and supplies. (Later on, I will also be offering single person/team tasks that can be completed to regain memories, as well.)

These trades will range from requests for small trinkets or favors (flower crowns, paying someone a compliment) to things like bringing her body parts, depending on what's asked of her. I'll be putting up a more complete list of example prices and tasks later, but in the meantime if you have a particular price you want to get your character saddled with (or absolutely don't!) you can drop me a comment here or poke me on plurk/slack @ opalinesque! Ideally, these prices will be things the character has to voluntarily choose to opt into— for example, telling the truth for a day of their own volition, rather than because they're compelled to.

"But Opal, what if my character fails to complete the task and snake has already done the thing for them?" There are two options for this, depending on the size of the task!

For smaller things: healing smaller wounds, offering supplies, etc, the things that are healed will rot and reopen, while supplies will break or be replaced by duds at in opportune moments. For larger favors, this does count as a failed test. Character on the memory loss path will lose them; characters doing regain will either be fine or not regain the next time their team wins. I will leave the details of that up to you because I mostly want to facilitate fun :3c

Further notes that I really need to clean up later: Snake often words her payments very vaguely. This is deliberate, and a mechanic you can play with if you'd like! If a character makes a sincere and genuine attempt to follow the spirit of the challenge instead of just the letter, the results will be better (wounds healing without scars, supplies being high-quality) than if half-assed.
who wants delicious post-forest terribleness

[ well, you're dead. maybe you remember that! or maybe you don't. there are some very strange things happening in the forest nowadays, after all. either way, you're in a river, soaked through with water in your hair, your clothes, your lungs as the current batters you—

and then something clamps down around your wrist with a vice grip and hauls you out onto the rocky shore, pushing you more or less into sitting upright so that you can cough whatever you breathed in out ]

There— there, yes ... Are you all right?

OR

[ maybe you've been dead a while. maybe you already know how this works— you've been bound, tested a few times. that last one, though, was really bad; it devolved into brawling and violence near the end and now everyone is trying to collect their missing body parts (the ones that weren't destroyed entirely, anyway). whether you're one of the poor losers doing that or just watching the carnage, a soft voice clears their throat nearby: ]

Oh ... that looks unpleasant. Would you like help with that ... ?
